The crane bases on the bird and needs some more sleight of hand than many easier origami figures. But nevertheless nearly everyone is able to fold this model correctly.
The crane isn't far away any more if you have folded the bird figure already.
Step #1:
Swing open the upper site upwards. Your folded piece of paper looks like a rhombus now.
Step #2
Fold the uppest site on the left to the right.
Step #3
Turn the piece of folded paper around and redo step #1.
Swing open the new upper site upwards.
Step #4
Redo step #2.
Fold again the uppest site on the left to the right.
The upper half depicts the body (tail, neck, torso) of the crane and the lower part looks like two wings, doesn't it?
Step #5
Now the first wing will be folded.
Swing open the upper site upwards as you did it twice before. Keep it open and make an angular folding back next to the bottom of the body. It doesn't matter at this time in which direction the wing will be folded but have a look on the direction of your first folded wing on the next step.
Step #6
Before you be able to fold the second wing turn the piece of paper around.
Just redo step #5 now. Swing open the upper site upwards as you did it three times before. Keep it open and make an angular folding back next to the bottom of the body but please note that the second wing is folded in the same direction as the first wing was folded and that the fold is at the same level.
Step #7
In this step, you will bring the crane's tail backwards.
Have a look where the wings are pointing to. If they are pointing to the left, the left non folded area will be the neck and the right are the tail. It's the same the other way 'round.
Just grab the tail and pull it outwards a little bit. Please perceive that the torso will also broaden a little and that you have to retighten the new foldings.
Step #8
It's time to dispose the folded piece of paper now and to fold the head. You can do it either by an inside reverse fold or just by doing the third step of the inside reverse fold because it is not so important now to do the steps one and two.
The animation shows only the third step.
