The squash fold can be done at every time of folding a figure if it is needed. This animation shows you folding a squash fold with an unfolded paper.
After you have fold the paper in half (after two valley foldings), do again a mountain and valley fold, put it back on the table. Open the prefolded side and fold flat it.
