The petal fold is often used by folding the swan.
After you have folded e.g. the preliminary base, fold the raw edges to the vertical center line and open them again. Then do a valley fold with the upper part down over the horizontal line between the new created vertices. After you have redone it, raise the bottom point and fold it to the back so that the side points can come together.
